Four Ring

These Multi Ring bits belong to the Lever category of bitting although they are frequently referred to as “gags”, which they are not.

Any bit with the reins attached to a section of the cheek that extends below the mouthpiece will, as the contact is taken up, create a lever effect. The lower down, the greater the leverage.

Because the mouthpiece is attached to a free moving ring rather than being fixed, there will be an initial upwards sliding movement of the bit’s mouthpiece as the contact is taken up. This will be most evident when the rein is attached to the lowest section of the bit's cheek.

It is good practise to use two sets of rein on multi ring bits. This would allow the upper rein to provide a milder action and to use the lower contact only when required.

TOP TIP

With its loose rings, a Multi Ring leaver bit can be inclined to pinch the horse’s lips. To help prevent this Bit Guards can be fitted but care should be taken to make sure that the bit is still the correct width as these will take up space making the fit narrower.  We recommend pairing your bit with Equus bit guards. Made in the UK from the most durable rubber.

The Dutch Gag is available in a wide range of mouthpieces to accommodate the requirements of many mouth types including vulcanite, jointed, copper roller, mullen and more.
