THE EGGBUTT DESIGN
Perhaps the most popular designs in the Snaffle category is the Eggbutt. It is available as with all bits, in a wide range of mouthpieces to meet the individual requirements of each horse. Its distinctive shape forms a bulbous that has a smooth tapered section each side where the external rings join onto the mouthpiece.
The Eggbutt design provides less movement or “play” of the mouthpiece when compared to that of a loose ring. It has the advantage of being unlikely to pinch the lips.
When used as the part of a Double Bridle the Snaffle is referred to as a Bradoon.
Bradoons may also have loose ring and in both cases the diameter of the rings will be considerably smaller. This is to allow room for a second bit (Weymouth curb).HOW WE MEASURE OUR EGGBUTTS
Please note, that we define the cheek of our Eggbutts from the top to the bottom, as shown in the image. Standard cheeks are 3.5” long.
Our mouth width is the measurement of the mouth between the ring pieces and not the full length of the mouthpiece.Remember not to have too tight of a fit. You should always leave a little room on each side for comfort.
